Robbie Fowler singles Joe Allen out for damning criticism

The Liverpool icon was disappointed with the midfielder's performance as Brendan Rodgers' side bowed out of the Champions League.

Robbie Fowler delivered a damning verdict of Liverpool midfielder Joe Allen during their ultimately ill-fated Champions League clash with FC Basel.

The former Liverpool striker was speaking at half-time, when the Reds were losing 1-0 to the Swiss side. A Steven Gerrard free-kick meant the Anfield outfit ended up drawing 1-1 but that result was still not good enough for progression to the knockout stages.

Before the second half, however, Liverpool showed no sign of even threatening in front of goal. And Fowler singled out Welshman Allen for criticism, suggesting he sometimes looks like 'a little boy.'

“I would have brought Lallana on for Allen [at half-time]. I think Allen looks like a little boy at times," Fowler said on ITV Sport.

At full-time, the former striker said: “Liverpool’s performance was better after the red card [for Lazar Markovic]. It wasn’t until twenty minutes to go that the players and even the crowd thought we could get something.

“Liverpool finished the stronger team [but] we didn’t really get any chances or attempts tonight.”
