Southampton player ratings vs Man United - £10m man poor, unsung hero the star

St Marys Southampton

We rate Southampton's players' performances during their 2-1 defeat to Manchester United.

Fraser Forster - 5

Question marks over his positioning on both Manchester United goals. Forster could have came out a faster pace to deny Robin van Persie his first goal and then should have claimed the cross which the Red Devils' second goal came from.

Nathaniel Clyne - 6

The Southampton right-back wasn't as involved as he is usually is in an attacking sense, but it was an otherwise solid display.

Maya Yoshida - 6

Called up to cover for Toby Alderweireld and did a decent job. Never appeared out of his depth against a imposing United forward line.

Jose Fonte - 5

His mistake to set-up Van Persie for United's first was his most notable action of the night. Recovered well after, but that was a costly error.

Ryan Bertrand - 5

Has been in fine for Southampton since signing, but he struggled to have an impact last night and was inaccurate with his distribution.

Victor Wanyama - 5

Normally a driving force from midfield, Wanyama wasn't able to show his usual quality.

Steven Davis - 7

The stand-out midfielder on the pitch. Davis is the unsung hero of this Southampton side, but his quality shone through last night.

Shane Long - 5

Long's work-rate may win him a number of admirers, but his poor finishing cost his team last night. The Irishman has never been a prolific scorer and it was easy to see why, as he missed a series of opportunities yesterday.

Sadio Mane - 4

Nothing worked for the winger, who looks short of final product at the moment. Should have been sent off in the last minute.

Dusan Tadic - 6

A spritely performance from Tadic, even if his passing wasn't as accurate as it has been in previous fixtures.

Graziano Pelle - 7

Took his goal well and his general link-up play was excellent. Should be more confident after hitting the back of the net.
