Steven Gerrard’s heroics for Liverpool against FC Basel in the Champions League drew many admirers on social networking site Twitter.

Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League tonight following a 1-1 draw with FC Basel at Anfield.

The Reds needed to win the Group B clash at Anfield in order to progress to the last 16 of Europe’s premier club competition, but they failed to do so.

Basel took the lead in the 25th minute through Fabian Frei, and it looked like that they would go on to pick up all three points until ‘Captain Fantastic’ Steven Gerrard stepped up.

The former England international midfielder scored one of his trademark free kicks with nine minutes left on the clock to spark hopes of another of those sensational Liverpool comebacks.

However, it was not to be as Basel held on for a 1-1 draw and finished runners-up behind Real Madrid in the group.

That goal from Gerrard could prove to be the 34-year-old’s final in the Champions League. With Liverpool struggling in the Premier League this season, there are doubts whether the Englishman would ever play in the competition again.

Below are the some of the reactions from current and former footballers on social networking site Twitter when Gerrard’s goal flew in.
