No Falcao, Mata or Carrick - Is this Manchester United's best XI?

Falcao Sir Alex

If you were Louis van Gaal and had to pick United's best starting XI right now.

Since the Manchester derby, Manchester United have won their last five Premier League matches in a row.

Louis van Gaal's side have looked far from their best but have, in a very Sir Alex Ferguson-esque way, ground out results when the've needed them most.

Due to injuries, Van Gaal has had to use a number of different players in his pursuit of success. But which XI are Manchester United's best?

In goal, there is no need to debate; David de Gea is the first name on the team-sheet. The back four, however, is more difficult to determine.

Luke Shaw should make it at left-back and so too Rafael down the opposite flank. Phil Jones is perhaps United's best centre-back and Marcos Rojo should arguably partner him. With more experience, Tyler Blackett or Paddy McNair could make the cut...

As with most sides, meanwhile, the midfield area is the hardest to judge. Daley Blind (discounting injuries) would make it to provide cover for the defence, while Marouane Fellaini's superb recent form perhaps suggests he warrants a place. Michael Carrick would miss out to Ander Herrera, while there is no place for Ashley Young or Antonio Valencia.

Going forward, Angel Di Maria is a dead cert - so there is no place for Juan Mata. And can Radamel Falcao really stake a claim for a place ahead of skipper Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie?
