Newcastle United could be edging closer to a January bid for Anderlecht’s Aleksandar Mitrovic, if newly-emerging reports are to be believed.
According to the Daily Mail, the Toon have sent scouts to watch the 20-year-old in action against Borussia Dortmund this Tuesday.
The Belgian side can no longer qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League but the Serbian is nevertheless likely to feature at the Westfalenstadion, with the Brussels side keen to build momentum ahead of a potential run in the Europa League.
Rumoured to be valued at around £15 million by his current club, Mitrovic made headlines last month after netting Anderlecht’s third and final goal in a 3-3 draw with Arsenal at the Emirates that saw the Belgians battle back from 3-0 down.
A target man at 6ft 3in, the striker has scored 28 goals in 61 appearances for Anderlecht since joining the club from Partizan Belgrade for €5 million in the summer of 2013.
Capped 10 times by Serbia, Mitrovic has found the net once for the national side to date, scoring in a 1-1 draw with Croatia played back in September of last year.
A highly-rated youngster, the striker was a key part of the Serbia side that won the UEFA Under-19 Championship of 2013, winning the Golden Player award for a series of match-winning performances.
And he could now be on his way to Newcastle United, should the Serbian impress the watching Magpies scouts this Tuesday.
He’s not the first Anderlecht star to be linked with a move to St James’ Park either, with teammate Dennis Praet previously rumoured to be on the Toon’s radar.
