H1Z1 hits Steam Early Access on 15th January 2015

Sony's zombie survival MMO arrives on PC via Steam Early Access next year.

Sony Online Entertainment's MMO sandbox zombie survival game - H1Z1 - is heading to Steam Early Access on 15th January, as announced by SOE boss John Smedley on Reddit.

"After a lot of hard work, we've decided to make the release date January 15th, 2015. This gives us just enough time to polish what we have and put out something we'll be proud of and hopefully you'll be excited to play," wrote Smedley.

He continued by saying, "What you'll be playing January 15th is a really fun game, but it's early. It's everything Early Access should be - a fun and compelling game that isn't finished. Our goal is to have you help us finish it and have it be a game we can build a large community in over time."

Don't be under any illusions that this will be a fleshed-out game however, as Smedley addressed comparisons to Bohemia Interactive's zombie survival game DayZ, saying: "We're not as feature rich and they have a lot of really cool stuff we just don't have yet. That being said, we're also a different game. We're an MMO and our goals are to create a large scale world that gives you the incredible feeling of being a survivor in a zombie apocalypse."

There will be two versions of the game at Early Access launch - one for $19.99, and another that's more expensive but has yet to be revealed. The different between the two versions is access to some of different game mode servers.

H1Z1 is coming to PS4 too, but Sony hasn't announced a release date for that yet.
