Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has praised his teammates efforts against Basel but says he is gutted at the club's Champions League elimination.
The forward has been out for months with injury and Liverpool have badly missed him, and he is not scheduled to return until 2015.
Liverpool needed a win at home to Basel to qualify for the knockout rounds, but could only manage a 1-1 draw.
Sturridge took to Twitter after the result to sum up his feelings.
We fought hard man. Sat here devastated wishing I could have helped. We'll come back stronger from this and i'm working hard to do the same.— Daniel Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) December 9, 2014
While he is trying to remain upbeat, it's clear it means a lot to him, having missed the chance to play in the Champions League entirely this season.
After the previous draw with Ludogorets, he sent a message urging his colleagues to make the next round.
Well done boys!! Unlucky to concede late on. Keeping my dream alive!!!— Daniel Sturridge (@D_Sturridge) November 26, 2014
Now he will have to settle for the Europa League in the latter part of the season, and hope he can fire the team into the top four in the Premier League and earn another shot.
