Newcastle sent scouts to watch Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic tonight - and he scored against Borussia Dortmund.

Newcastle have clearly found themselves a gem in Spanish striker Ayoze Perez, but the limited impact from Emmanuel Riviere and Facundo Ferreyra means they may look to snap up another striker in January.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies sent scouts to watch Anderlecht striker Aleksandar Mitrovic in action against Borussia Dortmund tonight - and he didn't disappoint.

The £12m-rated Serbian international, who has smashed almost one goal every other game, and his goalscoring exploits have attracted interest from Liverpool of late.

However, Newcastle seem to have identified the 20-year-old as a great partner for Perez, with Mitrovic assuming the role of a prototypical target man.

At over 6ft 2in, Mitrovic has great strength and aerial ability, which helped him bag yet another goal, this time against Dortmund in the Champions League.

With just five minutes left, Mitrovic overpowered a Dortmund defender to latch onto a cross and hammer a header into the top corner to earn his side a 1-1 draw.

Mitrovic, who played 89 minutes, once again proved his ability as a target man, just weeks after scoring against Arsenal - another goal where he overpowered a defender before planting a header in to the back of the net.

The old fashioned 'little and large' partnerships have worked in football for some time, and that may be what Newcastle boss Alan Pardew has in mind with his pursuit of Mitrovic as a partner for Perez - and his scouts will have surely been impressed with what they saw against Dortmund.
