Real Madrid B boss Zinedine Zidane has told Uruguayan reporters that he is delighted with the performances of Manchester United starlet Guillermo Varela.
The 21-year-old became David Moyes’s first signing when in charge of the Red Devils as he snapped up the full-back from Penarol for a reported €1.5 million fee.
The Uruguayan U20 international failed to make a start for United throughout last season and he was subsequently made available for loan in the summer.
Former French World Cup winner Zidane – who is now the full-time manager of the Real Madrid B team – was impressed on an initial scouting trip and decided to take Varela to Madrid on a season-long loan deal.
He has since gone on to establish himself as a regular with the Madrid outfit, making 13 appearances and showing consistency in his performances which has left his boss singing his praises.
“I’m delighted with Guillermo Varela. He is very serious and professional, he has a lot of quality and I have no doubts he will make it to the top,” he was quoted as saying by Uruguayan publication Ovaciondigital.
Only days after moving to the Spanish capital, Varela was a surprise inclusion in Carlo Ancelotti’s first-team squad for the 2014-15 Champions League campaign.
He is described as an attacking right-back, and with his contract at Old Trafford secured until the summer of 2018 he could well go on to become a long-term option for Louis van Gaal and his team.
