Three early contenders for West Ham’s Player of the Season

With the season almost at its halfway stage we consider three West Ham United players potentially in line for the club's Player of the Season award.

With the Premier League season nearing its halfway point now is a good time to consider which of West Ham United’s players have staked an early claim to be the Hammers’ Player of the Season.

There may still a lot of football to be played but some West Ham stars have really impressed thus far, as they have helped Sam Allardyce’s side climb up to third in the Premier League following their 3-1 win against Swansea City.

It has very much been a team effort, but there is a trio of players who deserve special praise and could well be contesting the end of year award if they continue in their current form.

Alex Song

On loan from Barcelona, Alex Song is proving to be a wonderful addition to the Hammers’ squad. Why his former club Arsenal did not move for him is a mystery that becomes more befuddling by the week, not that West Ham or their fans will be complaining.

Song has added steel to the midfield, allowing the more creative players to do what they do best and ensuring an extra level of protection for West Ham’s defence.

Diafra Sakho

Senegal forward Diafra Sakho hit the ground running following his summer arrival.

The 24-year-old already has eight goals in just 10 appearances for the club, and he netted on his return from injury against the Swans to show he intends to pick up where he left off.

West Ham needed to transform their forward-line to compete and Sakho looks like being one of the signings of the season.

Stewart Downing

Stewart Downing has been vital for his club so far this season, missing just one league match and playing every minute of the remaining 14.

In that time he has scored two goals, set up six and earned an England call-up and as well as West Ham’s forwards are doing, they would not be doing so well without Downing’s deliveries.
