The FA Cup draw for the third round has been made, and one of the 64 ties features Sunderland at home to Leeds United.
The tie is particularly notable in FA Cup context for it is a repeat of the 1973 Final. Leeds were favourites to win the trophy, but a goal from Scotsman Ian Porterfield secured a famous 1-0 upset win for Sunderland.
The two sides have met six times in the competition, each winning two games a piece with two going to replays.
In total, Sunderland have won 33 games between the pair in all competitions, but Leeds edge the head-to-head record with 39, and there have been 19 draws.
Their last meeting was in the Championship in 2006, with Sunderland winning 2-0.
The upcoming match could also see striker Connor Wickham feature against Leeds, who was on loan at Elland Road last season.
Perhaps the biggest hope for the Championship side is the hope Sunderland will rotate their squad, and there is a very real chance of this. Either side of the fixture, Sunderland face tough ties against Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League.
Here is a look at how both sets of fans reacted...
At least there will be a bit of 'edge' with Leeds, beats mind numbing games with the likes of Bolton/Blackburn/etc. #SAFC— Smudger (@OneNine1908) December 8, 2014
Leeds United fans:
#lufc was hoping for an easy tie like Man U away as that's a guaranteed win but will take Sunderland instead.— Jason Stothard (@JasonStothard) December 8, 2014
Still - chance of a scalp at Sunderland. If they have a tricky Xmas - can't imagine Gus and the boys will be at full strength. #LUFC— Tom Mordey (@TomMordey) December 8, 2014
