The Sunderland boss admits he and his players were mightily revealed that the Reds skipper didn't start against them on Saturday.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet believes 'everything changed' when Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard came on during their 0-0 draw at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Reds finished frustrated in front of goal, although Poyet himself felt it was a missed opportunity for visitingSunderland.

But the Black Cats coach admits he feared the worst when 'special' Gerrard came on for Liverpool, as everything changed - from the players to the crowd.

“It would be very easy for Brendan to play Gerrard 90 minutes every game but then lose him for a month with an injury," Sunderland boss Poyet told reporters.

"It is tough. Of course, when he came on, it wasn’t just the players who were affected. The crowd, the atmosphere – everything changed.

“That is when we started suffering as Liverpool were coming at us from everywhere. Listen, he is special. He is a player who with his presence on the pitch makes the whole place better. So it was good news when Brendan never played him. I was quite pleased!"

Liverpool now face FC Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
