Manchester United latest: Early team news; blow in €15m midfielder chase

All the latest news, views and transfer rumours from Old Trafford…

Manchester United take on Southampton at St Mary’s this evening in a vital match for both sides.

Louis van Gaal’s men are searching for their fifth consecutive victory while the Saints will want to get back to winning ways having failed to record a victory in their last three matches.

In early team news, the BBC reports that United welcome back Wayne Rooney following a knee injury while record signing Angel Di Maria is out with a hamstring injury.

Southampton are definitely without midfielders Jack Cork and Morgan Schneiderlin while on-loan defender Toby Alderweireld could miss out due to a hamstring problem.

In other news, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has admitted the Spanish side is interested in signing reported United target Lucas Silva.

The Brazilian midfielder currently plays for Cruzeiro and is rated at €15million and while United were tipped to make a move it appears they have strong competition from Real.

In comments later published by the Daily Star Ancelotti said, “It’s true that we are interested in Lucas Silva but he’s not the only player.

“If we need to, after the Club World Cup, we’ll take the decision depending on an evaluation of our midfielders who are injured at the moment.”
