Four tackles, nine clearances, 11 duels won: Aston Villa's Jores Okore rock solid

Trinity Road Stand - Aston Villa

Jores Okore put in yet another outstanding defensive performance in Aston Villa's 2-1 home win over Leicester on Sunday afternoon.

Jores Okore delivered another huge performance on Sunday afternoon to help Aston Villa claim a 2-1 home win over Leicester City and extend their unbeaten run to five matches.

Leonardo Ulloa stabbed Leicester ahead after 13 minutes when Villa keeper Brad Guzan spilled Riyad Mahrez's deflected shot, before Ciaran Clark headed in Ashley Westwood's free-kick to equalise soon after.

The game then remained level until the final 20 minutes when Alan Hutton netted from Christian Benteke's chipped pass to give Paul Lambert’s side back-to-back Premier League victories.

Those three points might not have been earned, however, were it not for the defensive shift Okore put in over the course of the 90 minutes, with the Danish centre-back rock solid again in his fourth consecutive start.

Having returned to the pitch during pre-season from a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament which saw him miss most of his debut campaign at Villa Park, Okore was forced to wait for his first-team comeback, with the likes of Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos, Nathan Baker and Clark all preferred over him.

However, with the former three all ruled out injured at present, the 10-times capped international has taken his chance and proved his worth to Lambert, with the Scot himself admitting that his teammates might have a hard time claiming their spots back.

"That's the aim of football, to have selection conundrums, and those two are going to give me that when others return,” he said after last Tuesday’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace.

"You've got to push a mate to get into a side, and at the minute these two lads are holding their own."

It remains to be seen whether Okore will indeed keep his place in the starting XI moving forward but, based on his recent performances, he no doubt deserves to.
