Former Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy has slammed suggestions that Andre Villas-Boas could replace Brendan Rodgers.
With Liverpool continuing to struggle, Reds boss Rodgers’s job is reportedly under threat.
One of the names mentioned in the British media who could replace the Northern Irishman at Anfield is Villas-Boas.
The Portuguese is well-versed in the Premier League, having managed Chelsea and Tottenham, and is currently having a good time at Russian club Zenit Saint Petersburg.
“Brendan deserves to keep his job," Murphy told talkSport, according to The Express. ”It would be a shock if he does go.
"If for some reason he does, AVB would not be on the list of 20 managers to replace him at Liverpool, never mind be the number one.
"It's ridiculous. He failed at Chelsea, he failed at Tottenham. Why would you take him at Liverpool?”
Villas-Boas arrived in England with a huge reputation following his exploits with FC Porto, but he was sacked first by Chelsea and then by Tottenham.
The Portuguese is a good manager - and he is showing that at Zenit - and could well return to the Premier League at some point in the future, but at the moment it is very unlikely that Liverpool will be interested in him.
Liverpool are unlikely to sack Rodgers anytime soon despite the club’s struggles this season. Even if they did, one suspects that Villas-Boas will not be on the club officials’ minds.
