Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Shaka Hislop has hailed the performance of Jak Alnwick against Chelsea on Saturday.
The 21-year-old started the Premier League clash at St. James’ Park on the substitutes’ bench, but he was called into action at half time due to an injury picked up by Rob Elliot.
It was not going to be easy for the youngster to face the likes of Cesc Fabregas, Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, but the Englishman did admirably well against the title favourites.
Alnwick’s performance has been praised by many ex-footballers and pundits, among them Hislop, who played for Newcastle and West Ham United.
Well played Mr. Alnwick, well played. Any keeper in the world would be happy with that as a debut.— Shaka Hislop (@ShakaHislop) December 6, 2014
The match against Chelsea was Alnwick’s competitive debut for Newcastle, and one that he is going to remember for the rest of his life.
Chelsea were favourites heading into the encounter, but Jose Mourinho’s side suffered a 2-1 defeat, their first in the Premier League this season.
The win means that Newcastle are currently seventh in the Premier League table with 23 points from seven matches.
