Back in 2013, Manchester United reportedly bid £3million for Dundee United midfielder Ryan Gauld.
The teenager had been dubbed – lazily or prophetically depending on how things play out – as a ‘mini Messi’ after a string of fine displays for the Scottish side.
Gauld may have only been 17, but he stood out among players 10 years his senior and it seemed only a matter of time before he moved on.
When he did, there was a twist in the tale, with Sporting Lisbon the side to ultimately sign the gifted youngster. But despite making 51 appearances for Dundee United he is yet to feature for the Portuguese club's first-team, instead representing their B side.
That is no surprise given his age, but the former United target may get that chance sooner than first thought, after he scored a wonderful goal this weekend.
With the ball bouncing in front of him a quick flourish of his left foot saw a shot fly past the opposing goalkeeper to open the scoring against Oriental Lisboa.
The match finished 4-3 but Gauld’s strike was the pick of the bunch, and the 18-year-old who had been tipped to become the next great United youngster is instead staking a claim at the club where Eric Dier made his name.
