Former Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp has said that Arsenal should have re-signed Alex Song.
The 27-year-old was one of the first players transfer-listed by Barcelona and was even linked with a move back to Arsenal, but it was West Ham who recruited him on loan in late August.
Redknapp believes that Song is Sam Allardyce’s side’s most important player, and that he will have a lot of offers at the end of the season.
“Alex Song’s performances for West Ham United raise two questions - who is going to take him at the end of the year and why didn’t Arsenal bring him back?” the 41-year-old wrote in The Daily Mail.
“People talk about the impact of Diafra Sakho and Enner Valencia at West Ham, but without a doubt Song is the reason they are third in the table.
“Arsene Wenger’s defensive midfield problem is one of the many reasons they are struggling this season and Song would’ve been perfect for them.
“He will have a lot of options come the end of the season when his loan from Barcelona comes to an end.”
In nine Premier League appearances so far this season, Song has created 10 chances, has a pass accuracy rate of 79%, and has won 50% of his duels.
The former Arsenal midfielder may have struggled to establish himself at Barcelona, but back in England, he seems to have recovered his old form.
One suspects that West Ham will be looking to sign Song on a permanent deal once his loan spell runs out at the end of the season.
Arsenal’s loss has been West Ham’s gain.
