This summer Arsenal lost Bacary Sagna. With little faith in Carl Jenkinson as a regular starting right-back they moved to bring in Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United.
That seemed to be it, Debuchy and Jenkinson, done. Then they spent cash on the signature of Calum Chambers from Southampton.
But even then it seemed as though Jenkinson had a chance. Arsene Wenger said he saw Chambers as a central defender in the future, so Jenko still had a chance.
Then he was loaned out to West Ham, Wenger announcing that Hector Bellerin would step up in his absence.
But this weekend the two had contrasting performances. Bellerin struggled to stop Stoke City yesterday, while Jenkinson also had his defensive moments to worry about against Swansea City.
But going forward he was immense.
His delivery for Andy Carroll's first goal was simply superb and throughout the game he troubled Ashley Richards, the Swansea left-back with his marauding runs and swashbuckling attitude.
The England international has perhaps been more consistent a performer than any of the Arsenal defenders this season, yet this summer they simply decided to give him away.
One thing for sure is this, he will be returning a far better player than the one that left - which is perhaps the positive Arsenal can take from this current situation.
Here is some of the reaction to his excellent performance against Swansea this afternoon for West Ham...
Can't wait till the end of the season when WHFC win PL & Carl Jenkinson makes his "I left Arsenal because I wanted to win trophies" speech.— Calamity Jane (@SweetAFCJane) December 7, 2014
These guys Song and Jenkinson look good. Arsenal could use them.— 7amkickoff (@7amkickoff) December 7, 2014
Not sure if Jenkinson will want to give up Champions League football next season to return to Arsenal & play in the Europa League— El Loco Goose (@CrazyGoose) December 7, 2014
Carl Jenkinson, what a shift. And true to his Arsenal allegiance, he hobbles off with an injury. Just to remind us all he's Arsenal.— Molefhi |#ForzaJules (@m_diablo) December 7, 2014
I really would like for Jenkinson to be back in an Arsenal shirt— Nat (@NatG_22) December 7, 2014
Fantastic cross from Jenkinson. Still don't understand why Arsenal loaned him out/don't re-call him with their defence so disjointed.— #JORDAN (@JordanQPR10) December 7, 2014
That ball from Jenkinson! Can he come back to arsenal?— Eric Walcott (@ericwalcott) December 7, 2014
Jenkinson has probably been Arsenal's best defender this season— Henry Simm (@HenrySimm) December 7, 2014
If we still had jenkinson at arsenal half of our problems would've been avoided I reckon— Damon (@DamonRussell_) December 7, 2014
Is Chambers (signed by Arsenal) really better than Jenkinson (loaned out by Arsenal)?— Jonathan Todd (@Jonathan_Todd) December 7, 2014
