Paul Merson predicts Southampton v Manchester United

Old Trafford Santa run

Former Arsenal star Paul Merson looks ahead to Monday’s Premier League clash between Southampton and Manchester United.

Former Arsenal attacker Paul Merson has backed Manchester United to pick up all three points from the Premier League clash against Southampton.

The Red Devils will take on the Saints at St. Mary’s Stadium on Monday and will head into the encounter as favourites.

United have won their last four league matches, and Merson believes that Louis van Gaal’s side will have it five out of five.

“I think Southampton have hit a brick wall,” the 46-year-old wrote on Skysports.com. “The teams they have beaten weren’t any of the big boys.

“They did well and kept Arsenal at bay for most of the game but they never looked like scoring and you have to win games.

“Even with 10 men, Man City ripped them apart. Man United - with Wayne Rooney back - will be a different kettle of fish and I can’t see them getting anything even at home.”

Southampton had looked good until last weekend when they were hammered 3-0 by Manchester City at home.

Then on Wednesday, Ronald Koeman’s side went down 1-0 to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in North London.

Playing at home against a top-four chasing United will give the Saints some confidence, but one suspects that it will be three loses in a row for the hosts.
