Former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur defender Jason Cundy believes that Manchester United are two centre-backs short of mounting a Premier League title challenge.
Writing in the IBTimes UK, the 45-year-old explained: “I think they need two top-class centre-backs to compete at the top level next season.
“I'm not convinced by Phil Jones or Jonny Evans, and Marcos Rojo doesn't look up to it as a centre-back – he doesn't effect games enough, and he gets caught out of position.
“In truth, he's probably a left-back rather than a centre-half. If van Gaal can sign two proven central defensive specialists, who can stay fit throughout the season and have the presence to organise the defence, they'll be a real force again.”
This is not the first time that a former footballer or a pundit has called for United to sign top-class centre-backs, and it won’t be the last.
The problem is that there are not too many world-class central defenders available, although things could change next summer.
What United manager Louis van Gaal has done so far is promote young and talented defenders from the youth team.
The likes of Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett have not done exactly badly, and perhaps United should retain their faith in the youngsters they have.
