Jamie Carragher explains why Chelsea boss is so special

Jose Mourinho has transformed Chelsea from underachievers to Premier League title favourites, claims Jamie Carragher.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has praised the transformation of Chelsea under Portuguese coach Jose Mourinho.

The self-proclaimed Special One returned to the Blues in the summer of 2013 after the club had endured a tough couple of seasons, including a sixth-place finish in the 2011/12 campaign.

The West Londoners’ transformation since his return has been evident, finishing third last season before topping the Premier League table after 14 games so far this campaign.

Aside from their terrific league form, Mourinho’s men are unbeaten this season in all competitions and many observers feel they have what it takes to emulate the famous Arsenal invincibles.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, football pundit Carragher believes Mourinho had everything to lose in returning to Stamford Bridge and says the club’s transformation proves why he is such a unique winner.

“While Chelsea appointed the biggest managerial name in the world, there was no guarantee that there would be a sudden transformation in their fortunes,” he wrote.

“So what Mourinho has done over the last 18 months is shining example of why he is a serial winner, a demonstration of his talent.

"Chelsea, it needs pointing out, hadn’t been in a title race since they won it under Carlo Ancelotti in 2010, finishing second, nine points adrift (10-11), sixth (11-12) and third (12-13).

“The championship had become the city of Manchester’s property, with Liverpool getting closer than anybody to wrestling it away. The main action at the end of the campaign had been going on without Chelsea.

“We won’t be saying that next May. Manchester City are the only ones who can halt Mourinho’s juggernaut. He went into the season knowing his job would be on the line if he failed to win anything but no other manager can deliver so impressively under such pressure.”
