Ex-Germany standout reveals Bayern Munich's Bastian Schweinsteiger might consider Chelsea move

Bayern Munich star Bastian Schweinsteiger would fancy a move to Chelsea, according to ex-teammate Thomas Hitzlsperger.

Former Germany and Aston Villa midfielder Thomas Hitzlsperger has revealed that Bayern Munich vice-captain Bastian Schweinsteiger has a soft spot for the Premier League and Chelsea in particular.

Hitzlsperger and Schweinsteiger were briefly on Bayern’s books together before the former opted to move to Villa in 2000 at the age of 18, but the pair were long-time teammates on the national team, lining up alongside one another on various occasions from 2004 to 2010.

The claret and blue legend holds his compatriot in high regard, having picked him in his ‘One2Eleven’ dream team while appearing as a guest on The Fantasy Football Club, where he also revealed that the World Cup-winner might well consider a move to Stamford Bridge if the chance came about in the future.

“He’s always been talking about a move abroad, and actually Chelsea is one of the teams,” Hitzlsperger said.

“Sometimes he plays in the park in Munich in a Frank Lampard shirt, so I think he has a soft spot for English football and Chelsea.

“It would be nice to see him come to the Premier League because he’s a tremendous player, but he’s enjoying life in Munich, he’s from there and he’s playing for one of the best teams in Europe.

“But, for his personality, I think it would be a great move.”

Schweinsteiger, 30, was in fact linked with a move to Manchester United this past summer, having seen his career flourish since Louis van Gaal moved him from the wing into a central midfield role upon arriving in Munich in 2009.

The one-club man has made just four substitute appearances so far this season after aggravating a knee problem during pre-season, but he remains an integral part of Pep Guardiola’s plans moving forward.

Nevertheless, with his contract at the Allianz Arena set to expire in the summer of 2016, one wouldn't want to rule out him making the same move that former teammate and ex-Blue Michael Ballack did in 2006 in the future.
