Three potential January signings for Southampton as Koeman targets additions

St Marys Southampton

We take a look at three January transfers Southampton could target, with Ronald Koeman looking to add depth to his squad.

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has confirmed that the side will be on the look out for additions in the January transfer window.

The Saints' start to the season has created talk of the potential for a European push and Koeman is determined to give his side the best chance of obtaining a top-six finish by bringing in quality at the next possible opportunity.

Southampton have one of the smallest squads in the Premier League and Koeman admits that bringing in further class will be important.

"I will speak to the board of the club, about what we need and what we would like to do," he said to FourFourTwo.

"This is the hardest league because you can lose against everybody. You have to be prepared every game and you can't play on 70 per cent.

"You have to be 100 per cent and that's difficult for us, because we need everybody.

"Everybody needs to be fit and we don't have the numbers and players that the big teams have, and that's difficult."

In this piece we take a look at three players Southampton could target in the January transfer window to bolster their squad.

Fabian Schar (FC Basel)

The 22-year-old defender has been tipped for greatness and he could be convinced to join the Saints' push for the top-four if they can keep their lofty position until January.

Schar has been linked with some of the biggest clubs across Europe, but Southampton could be the next step required in his journey.

A ball-playing centre-half, he would fit in with Southampton's style of play and should be available at a cut-price.

The defender's contract expires at the end of the year and, with Basel keen not to lose one of their key players for free, they may begrudgingly be prepared to accept a bid from the South Coast side.

Danny Ings (Burnley)

Southampton are forging a reputation for developing young English players and Ings looks a real prospect.

The striker has scored four goals in the Premier League already this season, despite missing part of it with injury, and his tireless work-rate would fit in well at St. Mary's.

Ings could provide Graziano Pelle with some serious competition for a place up-front and, given the Italian is nearing the age of 30, could be his long-term replacement if he fulfils his promise.

Ings should be available for cheaper than his actual value, due to his contract being up in the summer, and he could be a bargain by for Koeman's side.

Dele Alli (MK Dons)

A prodigious teenage talent, Alli may not be ready to play a regular first-team role for Southampton yet, but he looks like a potential England international of the future.

The 18-year-old has dominated League One this season, scoring nine goals in 22 games from central-midfield.

Alli has great pace, power and technically ability and looks like the sort of well rounded player who could thrive down on the South Coast.
