Gordon Ramsay's Limehouse, riverside pub gets ready for the festive season

Gordon Ramsay is like marmite. When he’s in bully mode (shouts a lot), I’m in the hate camp. When he shows his ‘passionate about food’ side (shouts a lot), I’m in the love camp. Having said that, I’ve never met the man, nor to my professional shame had I been to any of his establishments. Until last night when I visited the Narrow in Limehouse for the launch of their Winter terrace. The terrace which is open until the end of February is the bar equivalent of a conservatory and therefore covered. A good thing in this weather. With stunning views along London’s riverside it would be a perfect spot to watch the New Year fireworks. Or just perch and drink.

The original pub has been well and truly modernised, so manages to avoid feeling narrow. The interiors of white wooden walls and candles give it a very festive atmosphere. One that you could imagine settling into for a session. The only thing that jarred with me were the black floor tiles, which looked like they belonged in a showroom bathroom. But that’s a minor quibble.

Being from the House of Ramsay the food is great. From the canapé menu, the walnut and gorgonzola dumplings were heavenly, and I could have demolished a plate full of the goose rillettes crostinis. Given its a bar, the team has designed some special cocktails to celebrate the Winter Terrace opening. My personal pick was the Woodford Reserve (no relation) based Mulled Beer. Warm, spicy and a big whisky kick. Perfect for the winter months. The other options from the egg nog to the French Toddy were a bit of a mixed bag for my palate. Cocktail aficionados will either love them or hate them. Just like something else I know.

It’s taken me a long time to visit the Narrow or indeed any Gordon Ramsay establishment. It won’t take me so long to try the next one.
