STATS: Numbers consistent so why is Southampton's Graziano Pelle struggling?

Statistics suggest that Graziano Pelle needs to keep the faith during his Premier League goal drought at Southampton.

Strikers are judged on goals, they always have been and always will be.

When they dry up, it does not take long for the spotlight to descend and for struggles to be dissected in minute detail.

Why isn’t he scoring? What is he doing wrong? Is he doing anything differently? Are chances still coming his way? Has his confidence been rocked?

All good questions and ones forwards around the world will be accustomed to facing.

How, though, do you bring an end to such droughts and silence those beginning to question your ability?

For Graziano Pelle, the answer would appear to be - keep doing what you are doing.

The Italian - who burst out of the blocks with six goals, nine in all competitions, to take the Premier League by storm and earn senior international recognition - has gone five top-flight games without finding the target.

The Opta statistics above suggest that he is doing little wrong.

He is still getting into the right positions, with it not a case of opportunities drying up.

It could be argued, though, that a lack of goals is playing on his mind and he has started to snatch at the chances which come his way.

He has not been working goalkeepers as often as he was earlier in the season and has also seen a handful of ‘big chances’ pass him by.

Pelle now needs to keep the faith, believe in himself and hope that he gets back on the goal trail as quickly as possible, with it likely that an effort which ricochets in off his shin or shoulder will be all that is required to get the feel-good factor flowing again.
