Player of the Year after just 15 matches – United loanee Nani wins award

Manchester United player Nani is to be awarded for his fine performances since returning to his homeland.

Manchester United winger Nani will be crowned Sporting Lisbon’s Player of the Year later this month despite playing just 15 matches since returning to the club on loan.

The Portuguese international temporarily left Old Trafford in the summer and hit the ground running at Sporting, scoring six goals and providing six assists to date.

That form has now prompted the 28-year-old to be awarded the prize that went to former United target William Carvalho 12 months ago.

Portuguese newspaper Record reports that Nani will collect the award at a gala to be held in Lisbon on December 18.

The Stromp Prize for Player of the Year is named after former Sporting star Francisco Stromp and has been handed out annually since 1992.

The news will be a huge boost for Nani as he looks to suitably impress United manager Louis van Gaal.

It remains to be seen if the wide-man has a future at Old Trafford but his form this season certainly suggests the Dutchman may give him a chance next summer having opted to do without him for his debut campaign in England.
