"Simon Mignolet is working very hard on the training field to improve..."
Should those be words Liverpool fans are encouraged by - or fearful of?
The Reds goalkeeper has been in simply woeful form for the majority of the current campaign, occasionally producing astonishing reflex saves but looking worryingly out of his depth in all other areas of his game. In Mignolet's last Premier League appearance - at Leicester City - the Belgian capped another poor performance with an own goal.
But boss Brendan Rodgers' latest quotes appear to be backing the 26-year-old... so should Liverpool supporters be worried that he will continue as the club's no.1 regardless of his displays, or be encouraged that he acknowledges the need to improve?
It is a similar situation for Dejan Lovren, the £20 million summer signing who has also looked worryingly out of his depth at Anfield. Rodgers can choose from Martin Skrtel, Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho at centre-back, however, so Lovren has indeed been dropped in recent weeks.
Both he and Mignolet were put through their paces in training on Thursday afternoon as the Reds boss watched on. One wonders exactly what he made of their progress (or lack thereof) - and whether the duo will start against Sunderland this Saturday...
