The Daily Star has predicted a potential problem for Arsenal and Liverpool if they move on reported plans to try and sign Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain.
The PSG forward has frequently been linked with a move to the Premier League, with the Star claiming that both Premier League sides are ready to break their own transfer records to try and sign him.
“Several sources in the French capital claim that Premier League duo Arsenal and Liverpool are aware of the Uruguayan's current unhappiness and will try to lure him to England in January,” reports the Star.
“It's believed both clubs are willing to break their respective record transfer fees and offer PSG a staggering £50m for the former Palermo star.”
So what’s the problem should Arsenal or Liverpool get their cheque books out? It relates to another side interested in him.
Cavani is thought to be a key target for Louis van Gaal at Manchester United, with the Star predicting that should Arsenal or Liverpool move for him, United could be prompted into moving on their own plans to get him.
The worry that creates for the Gunners and the Reds is whether they will be able to cope with the financial power of United.
Despite not having any Champions League football this season, United spent big to drastically improve their squad last summer with £60 million spent on Angel Di Maria alone.
They are also in a very unique position where they have two players (Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao) earning around the £300,000 per week bracket.
United’s recent financial spending could be seen as a huge risk if they don’t get back into Europe for next season but if Cavani is available and if another side moves for him, United would surely be tempted to test that team’s financial resolve.
