Stan Collymore doesn't believe Arsenal will win the league inside three years.
Former Liverpool and England star Stan Collymore has dismissed the notion that Arsenal could win a Premier League title inside Arsene Wenger’s current contract.
Wenger suggested that he expected to win the league when he was questioned over whether it was possible before his current deal with the club expires.
However, during his commentary stint for talkSPORT ahead of the Chelsea v Tottenham game last night, Collymore dismissed the idea that Arsenal can get themselves closer to Chelsea and Manchester City.
“No chance – I don’t believe that Arsenal, with Chelsea and Manchester City’s defence and attack, can win the league within three years,” said Collymore.
Wenger has always maintained that his side have the quality and potential to be the best side in England but there is a perception that he’s failed to address key areas in his squad, which has affected the side.
Arsenal are in need of January additions if the players are available, with a top quality defender and a holding midfield man two requirements for Wenger’s current side.
He did well to complete a late deal for Danny Welbeck from Manchester United over the summer, but there are problematic areas in the squad which need to be addressed.
Arsenal’s defence has been closely analysed over the last few weeks and the injection of some quality and experience could help prevent instances, which have left Arsenal extremely exposed on the counter attack against good sides.
Collymore seems to have made the assessment based on the Arsenal of right now, but if Wenger adds well in the transfer market and improves the squad, they could get closer to the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City over the next couple of seasons.
Wenger has dismissed the notion that he doesn’t spend big. It’s now time for him to spend big again and get Arsenal back to a position where they are serious title contenders.
