Manchester United defender Chris Smalling is confident that his side will get the better of Southampton on Monday.
United have defeated Crystal Palace, Arsenal, Hull City and Stoke City since losing the Manchester derby to Manchester City at the start of November.
Louis van Gaal’s side seem to be on the up, and Smalling is certain of a win at Southampton, who suffered a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday.
“After the Arsenal game the next target was to get six points out of these two games [Hull and Stoke] and we have done that,” United’s official website quotes the 25-year-old England international as saying.
“Now we will work hard for the rest of the week because we have got two big games next week that could put us up there with the boys around us.
“I think we can beat Southampton. At the moment we are in such a good run of form - we have got that belief back so I think we can go there and win.”
United should indeed be confident for the match and should be considered favourites, but playing at home will give the Saints an edge.
Ronald Koeman’s side have lost against Manchester City and Arsenal in successive games, and there have been suggestions that their ‘bubble has burst’.
Southampton will certainly be looking to prove a point to their detractors, meaning that it will not be easy for United.
