Aly Cissokho might have been at Aston Villa for just under four months, but the left-back is already being linked with a departure.
According to Italian news outlet Mediaset, Napoli are preparing a surprise swoop for the Frenchman in the New Year, with reports even claiming that club director Riccardo Bigon is set to travel to England to watch him in person over the coming weeks.
Rafa Benitez’s side are said to be desperate for help on the left-hand side of defence given Camilo Zuniga’s fitness issues and Faouzi Ghoulam’s impending departure to the African Cup of Nations, with the team exploring a number options ahead of the transfer window re-opening.
Cissokho, 27, has been an ever-present in the league for Villa since arriving from Valencia in August for around £2.5 million, with the former Liverpool loanee looking solid if unspectacular so far.
He came close to making a well-documented move to Serie A in the past, when a €15 million fee was agreed between Porto and AC Milan over a proposed transfer to the San Siro, but the deal collapsed at the last-minute because of concerns over his teeth.
Regardless, considering Villa’s lack of options behind him, it’s hard to imagine manager Paul Lambert agreeing to sell Cissokho this winter, unless Napoli come in with a bid which is simply too good to turn down – an unlikely scenario given the Italian side are looking at him as a short-term solution.
