Arsenal morning news: Wenger praises Alexis and Giroud; Tottenham defender linked

Olivier Giroud and Mathieu Debuchy

All the latest news and gossip from The Emirates Stadium this morning.

Arsene Wenger has been waxing lyrical about the performance of Alexis Sanchez once again, after the Chilean earned them three points against Southampton in the Premier League last night.

In a night when Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster frustrated Arsenal in the end it fell to Alexis Sanchez to score the only goal of the game late on, firing home a cut-back from Aaron Ramsey.

Wenger said of the goal and Alexis in general:

“Alexis has such desire to fight and find something special to get the goal. We are in December, he arrived in July. When you look at the goals and the impact he has had on the team, it is tremendous.”

The £33 million star has scored an impressive 14 goals already this season.

Wenger was also praising of Olivier Giroud. The French striker made a real difference after entering the field for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the second half.

And Wenger said of the striker:

"He worked very hard and we have a very good preparation system. Every time the players come back we get them to a point where they are basically ready but, having said that, he played 70 minutes on Saturday and 25 today. He was a bit jaded today. His physical presence made a difference."

Arsenal are reported to be eyeing up a move for North London rivals Tottenham Hotspur's defender Vlad Chiriches.

The Romanian is expected to leave Spurs in January with the likes of Roma and Inter Milan keen on the Romanian - who has failed to adapt to English football.

The report, from The Express, seems far-fetched and most Arsenal fans would feel rightly insulted if Wenger brought in the hapless Tottenham man as their defensive solution.

Best to ignore this spurious rumour.
