Former Arsenal star Paul Merson was impressed with Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, but he is still backing Chelsea to win tonight.
Spurs registered their third successive win in all competitions at the weekend when they got the better of Everton 2-1 at home in the Premier League.
It was Tottenham’s best performance at White Hart Lane in the league this season and impressed many, including Merson.
“Sunday was the best I’ve seen Spurs play under Mauricio Pochettino,” the 46-year-old wrote on Skysports.com. “They played with a lot more tempo and created more chances.”
Tottenham are back in action tonight when they take on league leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, and will head into the game high on confidence.
However, Merson claims that Mauricio Pochettino’s side will lose the London derby and explains why.
“Diego Costa is obviously missing - Sunderland were very organised and they all knew how to do their jobs, but I don’t think Tottenham can do that,” wrote the 46-year-old.
“Chelsea should win fairly comfortably because I don’t see how they’ll be able to defend against them for 90 minutes.”
Despite winning three matches in a row, Tottenham have not looked entirely convincing and will indeed find it hard against Chelsea.
Spurs’ high-pressing game could be a problem as well, but perhaps it would not be fair to ask Pochettino’s team to do what Sunderland did.
Tottenham and Sunderland are two different footballing sides, and perhaps Pochettino should stick to his style instead of trying to change it against Chelsea.
Chelsea will be favourites to win tonight, but writing off Tottenham’s chances of picking up a point would not be very wise.
