On this day: No striker in January says Wenger, United coach backs Fellaini

Marouane Fellaini Belgium

On the 3rd December 2013 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United and Arsenal.

Let's cast our eyes back to this exact day, the 3rd December 2014, but a year earlier.

What were the main tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 3rd December 2013…

Fellaini will come good

A year ago today and Manchester United coach Phil Neville was backing Marouane Fellaini to come good at Old Trafford.

The Belgian had struggled since his £27.5 million move from Everton to join Neville and David Moyes at Manchester United.

"What is important for Marouane now is to play well in a match we win and he scores a goal. He needs to experience that feeling when you are part of a team that wins.

"It is fine having that feeling when you are part of a squad but it is great to have it when you are part of a team that wins.

"He (also) needs to start scoring from midfield. There is nobody better at that than Felli."

A year down the line and Neville is gone but Fellaini remains. Yesterday he showed what he can bring to the party at Manchester United, scoring a crucial goal as they beat Stoke City 2-1 and he finally looks the part in a United shirt.

No Pato, no Morata

Arsene Wenger was discussing transfer speculation at the club - seemingly unimpressed by its prevalence.

It mainly stemmed from reports Arsenal wanted both Alexandre Pato and Alvaro Morata. But Wenger was certain that neither's services were required at The Emirates:

"I am not concerned about that. We have at the moment Yaya Sanogo who is a striker we brought in during the summer, who is coming back from injury in January. Hopefully he will help us in the second part of the season. No [there has been no bid for Pato]. No. There is no truth in that [a bid for Morata]. That is all I can say, I have not been in touch with them [Real Madrid]."

Wenger was telling the truth, but he did strengthen the attacking department this summer bringing in Alexis Sanchez and Danny Welbeck.
