Manchester United player ratings v Stoke: Fellaini and De Gea shine

There were plenty of positive performances for Manchester United against Stoke last night.

Manchester United made it four wins from their last four games with victory over Stoke last night although they were made to work harder for the victory than Louis van Gaal would have liked.

Fortunately, the only argument happening on the Old Trafford training ground this morning is going to be between Juan Mata and Marcos Rojo, as they squabble over who claims United’s winner.

United have been badly affected by injuries throughout this season but they have momentum heading into a difficult game against Southampton this Monday, which will present them with a difficult test.

Here are our player ratings for the game last night.

De Gea – 7

Had a relatively quiet game but kept his concentration with some top class saves in injury time.

Valencia – 7

Did a decent job at right-back and attacked well as he always does.

Smalling – 6

Another decent game from Smalling as he made the right decisions at the right times.

Rojo – 6

As above. Seemed determined to claim United’s winner but did his defensive duties effectively.

Young – 6

Seems to be revitalised in recent weeks and put himself on the line to keep United ahead late on.

Herrera – 7

A tidy, all round midfield performance. Provided a great assist for United’s first goal.

Carrick – 7

United know exactly what they’re getting from Carrick. He was superb as he protected the defence.

Fellaini - 8

Seemed like everything he touched last night turned to gold and his header for the first goal showed immense power.

Mata – 7

Perhaps a little unlucky to have been in and out of the side this season but played well and has given LvG a positive selection headache.

Wilson – 7

Looked quick and enthusiastic up front. He will have better games and performances but can be proud of himself.

Van Persie – 6

A little disappointing perhaps after his great goal last weekend but showed his experience in attack when he needed to.
