Manchester United latest: De Gea labeled 'most important player,' Fellaini repaying Van Gaal

David Gea saves against Sunderland

The latest news, views and rumours from Old Trafford.

David de Gea

Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes goalkeeper David de Gea is the club's most important player right now.

The Spaniard has been in superb form recently and made another sensational stop during United's 2-1 win over Stoke City last night.

And the Dutchman believes De Gea has matured greatly since arriving at Old Trafford.

"De Gea’s the most important player at the moment at United," Meulensteen told Sky Sports News. "He has made so many incredible saves. We always knew he had that in his game and now he has really settled into the Premier League.

"He was a young kid when he came to the league... he's still young and it takes time. It takes three seasons and what he has done is matured and grown into the Premier League. He knows now what to expect and you can see how he performs."

Marouane Fellaini

Meanwhile, former Man United midfielder Paul Ince believes Marouane Fellaini is repaying Louis van Gaal's confidence in him.

On Fellaini, who scored the opener against Stoke City last night, Ince told talkSPORT: “You have to perform every week, you can’t get away with bad performances, and the early part of Fellaini’s stint at Man United he struggled.

"This year it seems Van Gaal has put belief in him, given him some confidence, and he is paying him back, that is for sure.”
