Liverpool came from behind to win 3-1 at 10-man Leicester City in Tuesday night’s Premier League clash, with under-fire goalkeeper Simon Mignolet putting in another shaky performance.
Mignolet was almost left red faced in the 19th-minute when he inexplicably cleared straight to Esteban Cambiasso, only for the Argentine midfielder to shoot wide of an open goal from 25 yards out.
The Belgium international looked to have atoned for the mistake three minutes later when he saved sharply from Jamie Vardy, but Leonard Ulloa’s resulting shot found the back of the net via the post and the back of the error-prone keeper’s head.
The visitors levelled soon after, however, when Adam Lallana netted after Rickie Lambert's knock down, before Steven Gerrard marked his return to the line-up nine minutes after the break when he slotted in from a poor Wes Morgan clearance.
Morgan was then sent off in the 63rd-minute after wresting Lambert to the floor when through on goal, before Jordan Henderson sealed a deserved Reds win seven minutes from the end.
Nevertheless, despite the win, it’s no surprise that fans were eager to voice their displeasure with Mignolet’s performance at the final whistle, having seen him make a similarly poor error in last week’s 2-2 Champions League draw at Ludogorets, with few left defending him on social media at this stage.
I'd drop Mignolet for the next game. His confidence is shot and he needs to be taken out of the firing line. #LFC— Mark Beck (@MB_Ktubes) December 3, 2014
What's most frustrating is that #LFC swapped Reina for Mignolet. Like getting over the flu and then immediately catching strep throat.— Joseph Zucker (@JosephZucker) December 2, 2014
I've never felt so uncomfortable watching a GK like Mignolet. The guy cant kick a ball past the halfway line. A New GK in Jan is a must #LFC— Kop Nation (@Kop_Nation) December 2, 2014
Simon Mignolet isn't mentally strong enough to play for #LFC. Then add his goalkeeping faults. Not going to work unfortunately.— Alan Hoey (@Alan_Hoey) December 2, 2014
Mignolet has to go.. We need a better keeper to apply pressure on his position because this just isnt good enough.. #LFC— Stüdge - SK - SMG (@StudgeKingSMG) December 2, 2014
Simon Mignolet is the worst keeper in the Premier League, period. #LFC— Caleb Coy (@calebcoy23) December 2, 2014
#LFC won make me forgot how bad Mignolet was tonight ! I fotgive, but never forget ..— Aphiyalil (@Fruliland) December 2, 2014
A sound win for #LFC albeit against a 10 man Leicester. Certain that Rodgers's loyalty to Mignolet will cost in the long run though— onthebackpost (@onthebackpost) December 2, 2014
That win though papered over two massive bollock ups by Mignolet again tonight #LFC— Stephen O' Regan (@SteveOReganLFC) December 2, 2014
Wonder how different the records of Utd and Liverpool would be this season if you swapped De Gea and Mignolet? 10 pt swing at least? #LFC— Dan Tunna (@dantunna) December 2, 2014
For his and everyone's good - Mignolet really needs a "time out" #LFC— Anfield Talk (@Anfield_Talk) December 2, 2014
