A change of scenery can often bring the best out of a player feeling down on his luck and denied the regular opportunities he craves at a former employer.
If that change takes him back to familiar surroundings, those in which he already feels comfortable, all the better.
Gyfli Sigurdsson made such a move over the summer, with the opportunity to re-sign for Swansea City grabbed with both hands.
The switch may have been slightly driven by Tottenham Hotspur, as they closed in on Ben Davies and sought to offer a makeweight in the deal, but the Icelandic midfielder still jumped at the chance to take in a second spell in South Wales.
His first, back in 2012, saw him excel during a loan move from Hoffenheim – with his efforts in the Premier League earning him an £8.8 million transfer to White Hart Lane.
Things did not go entirely to plan for him in north London, with Tottenham often favouring other creative options, but Sigurdsson still offered glimpses of what he is capable of.
Swansea have opened the door for him to display those talents on a more consistent basis, and the 25-year-old has responded with an impressive opening to the season.
His numbers are getting better and better, with his last two top-flight outings seeing him post season-best figures in terms of chances created.
|Match||Total Att Assist||Goal Assist||Big Chance Created||Total Scoring Att||Total Pass||Mins Played|
|Gylfi Sigurdsson||Swansea vs C. Palace||6||1||2||5||45||90|
|Gylfi Sigurdsson||Swansea vs QPR||5||0||0||2||48||87|
The two showings above have seen Sigurdsson help Swansea to four points, with a 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace followed by a 2-0 victory over Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday.
He will be hoping to keep the positivity flowing over the coming weeks, with December 14 a date he is likely to have highlighted in his diary.
Tottenham are due to visit the Liberty Stadium in the middle of the month and the Swans’ playmaker-in-chief will be determined to show those who nudged him towards the exits that they were wrong to let him leave.
