Arsenal decide to sell Podolski and Campbell, Wenger targets short-term signing - Report

Arsenal have a reported £20 million to spend in January.

The transfer window opens in just under a month, and Arsenal are a side in need of defensive improvements.

Arsene Wenger has already admitted he needs a new centre-back, having failed to replace Thomas Vermaelen, while fans are demanding a defensive midfielder.

His problem is however he is not a great believer in the value of January sales, and is reportedly setting his sights on a temporary solution.

The Times reports he has just a £20 million budget, and has decided to axe two players on the fringes of the first team.

"He (Wenger) has been given £20 million to spend by Arsenal’s board next month, but because of the perceived lack of quality available during the January window he is unlikely to spend such a budget, and will instead focus on pragmatic short-term signings such as the loan deal that brought Kim Kallström to the club last season."

The report adds: "Arsène Wenger is planning to offload Lukas Podolski and Joel Campbell when the transfer window opens next month as part of an overhaul at Arsenal  Wenger will aim to set up permanent transfers rather than loan deals, and is planning to use any funds generated to bolster his defensive resources."

Neither Podolski or Campbell will be happy with their seasons so far, neither starting a Premier League game. Campbell has stayed quiet on his lack of playing time, while Podolski has said on numerous occasions he is unhappy.

Wenger said last month he intended to keep the German, but his actions and the World Cup winners growing unrest suggests otherwise.

Campbell has battled for three yeas out on loan to gain a shot at Arsenal, and will feel he is yet to really be given one. It's likely he could try to push for a loan deal rather than a permanent exit and keep his dream of making it at the club alive by showing the gunners they would be making a mistake by excelling for another Premier League side.
