Manchester United midfielder Ander Herrera has given his thoughts on the significance of the win against Stoke last night.
The 2-1 victory was United’s fourth win in their last five games and the dynamic midfielder has suggested it was a performance which has allowed the side to increase their confidence.
“We are very happy - the team has a lot of confidence now,” Herrera is quoted by United’s official Twitter account.
Confidence is extremely important for United heading into their next run of fixtures because December is not going to be an easy match.
United travel away to Southampton, play Liverpool at home, host Newcastle and visit Tottenham in their next five games, which is a period that could go a long way to deciding whether they finish fourth by the end of the campaign.
United haven’t been helped by a number of injuries to key players throughout the season so it’s important they give themselves advantages in other areas, which allows the side to make the most of a strong team spirit and feeling of unity.
If United make it into the New Year in the top four then the momentum they have now will only increase and they surely can’t be as badly affected in the treatment room as they have been over the first part of this campaign.
Once van Gaal is able to pick a more consistent and settled side, with more players available, the lottery of some fixtures from the past few months will seem like a distant memory.
In terms of the games coming up, the matches against Liverpool, Newcastle and Spurs are all significant because they are fixtures where United lost points last season.
The matches against Liverpool and Tottenham also represent chances for United to make a point against sides they are expected to be competing against for a top four place by May.
Confidence is everything for any team and United’s job now is to maintain it and build on it.
