It is not turning into the season that both Lille and Liverpool had hoped for, even less so for Divock Origi, the 19-year-old striker that is on loan at the French club until the end of the season.
Dropped against Krasnodar in the Europa League, he was brought back into the starting lineup against Bordeaux and Sunday, and the less said about the performance the better.
However, blame can’t rest squarely at the feet of the Belgian striker; every one of his 10 teammates can hang their hand in shame over the abysmal display that they put on at the Stade Chaban Delmas.
Lille managed a paltry seven shots on goal, and the two efforts from Origi were speculative shots from outside the area, neither of which came close to testing Cedric Carrasso.
Origi was replaced late on, and some fans remarked whether he was ever really on the field to begin with.
On Wednesday night, Lille welcomes Paris Saint-Germain to the Stade Pierre Mauroy and there is not a lot of optimism surrounding the home side. PSG are unbeaten this season and will be looking to extend their winning run all the way till the winter break.
Lille’s only hope of picking up anything from the game is a performance from Origi. Not since the Europa League game against Wolfsburg has the Belgian found the back of the net, and that was a penalty.
Two of his four goals this season have come from the spot; his last goal in open play came in Lille’s last victory, which was against Bastia on the 27th of September.
Lille need Origi to rediscover his form and Origi needs service and chances if he is going to stand any chance on Wednesday night. The young striker is struggling with the responsibility of being Lille’s main beacon of hope, but he needs his teammates to step up and help in his development.
PSG are without Zlatan Ibrahimovic on Wednesday, it gives the home side a glimmer of hope, but without a drastic upturn in form and positive attitude, that glimmer could quickly disappear.
