22 Clearances and a game-changing moment: West Ham star James Tomkins excels

West Ham Upton Park

West Ham defender James Tomkins put in a strong showing as the Hammers beat West Brom 2-1.

James Tomkins scored his first goal since 2012 to help West Ham to a crucial 2-1 win away at West Brom.

The match had a pivotal feel to it for the Hammers, who having lost to Everton a fortnight ago, have now recorded two back-to-back wins.

As well as his striker, James Tomkins was solid at the back, and set an individual season record for the 2014/15 Premier League campaign to date.

James Tomkins West Ham West Brom vs West Ham 22 10
Dejan Lovren Liverpool QPR vs Liverpool 20 10
Jason Shackell Burnley Stoke vs Burnley 20 6

No player has made as many effective clearances in a single game this season, as Tomkins did against West Brom.

That says something for the pressure the Baggies were able to put Sam Allardyce's side under, but also about Tomkins' reading of the game and ability and determination to beat any opposition player to the ball.

West Ham stay fifth in the table as a result of the win, only one point behind Manchester United. Their next game is at home to Swansea City on Sunday.
