Louis van Gaal gives Wayne Rooney and Angel di Maria injury update

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has offered a brief update as the fitness of Wayne Rooney and Angel di Maria.

Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has offered an injury update as to two of his major stars.

Angel di Maria and Wayne Rooney both missed out on the 2-1 win at home to Stoke City, with the captain having sustained an ankle problem against Hull, and the Argentine taken off early in the weekend's game.

United had kept Rooney's injury quiet ahead of the Stoke game, and seemingly still are unaware of the extent of it.

Manager Louis Van Gaal told SkySports: "Wayne has a scan tomorrow and then we will know more.

"I'm pleased Di Maria's injury is not so heavy."

Van Gaal did add that he felt there was light at the end of the tunnel with regards to getting players back again, but may not want to speak too soon regarding Rooney.

United can ill afford him to be out for a sustained period, but the timing of the next game, against Southampton on Monday night, gives himself and Di Maria extra time to recover.
