Chelsea be warned, Sergio Aguero says Manchester City have the Blues in their sights and have no intention of allowing their Premier League title to be snatched away without a fight.
The men from Stamford Bridge set the top-flight pace at present, with a 13-match unbeaten opening to the season seeing them surge clear at the summit.
A six-point advantage has them well clear of the chasing pack, but defending champions City are starting to move ominously through the gears.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men have already endured domestic and European wobbles this season, with points dropped at home and in the Champions League.
Both campaigns are now back on track, though, with vital victories over Bayern Munich and Southampton helping to raise morale inside the Etihad Stadium.
The fact that Chelsea have yet to stumble could play into City’s hands, with it difficult to imagine that Jose Mourinho’s side can emulate the Arsenal ‘Invincibles’ of a decade ago.
Aguero says Manchester’s finest will be ready to pounce when the capital giants do slip up, with both of their title successes from the past three seasons having seen them finish with a flourish to cross the line in first place.
He told Sky Sports News: “Of course we’ve got a chance, definitely. We’re convinced of that.
“We can look back at recent history – what was it, six games to go and we were eight points behind Manchester United and we caught them in the first season that I was here. That’s the benchmark.
“We have still got 20 games to go this season so we are very much on and we’ve got a chance of catching Chelsea.”
City’s next outing takes them to Sunderland on Wednesday, a part of the world in which Chelsea dropped two points over the weekend in a goalless draw.
The Stadium of Light has also been an unhappy hunting ground for the reigning champions in recent times, with 1-0 defeats suffered in their last four visits to Wearside.
Bucking that trend in midweek will be vital if City are to remain hot on the heels of the current pacesetters and Aguero, as the division’s top marksman with 12 goals to his name, needs to ensure that he is on top of his game if a mid-season prediction of title challenges is to be proved correct.
