Ashley Young - Manchester United's best defender against Stoke

Ashley Young excelled defensively as Manchester United beat Stoke.

Manchester United held on to clinch a 2-1 home win against Stoke after the away side mounted a late fightback.

Crucial in supporting goalkeeper David de Gea in their defensive stand, was Ashley Young, deputising for injured £30 million defender Luke Shaw.

Playing out of position, Young shone, showing his versatility to be a real asset and ensuring for now at least, he can be of real use to the club.

Marcos Rojo 1 3 1 0 0 0 0 5 90

Stacking up the performance of the defenders who featured, by adding up their various attributes, Young was the best Manchester United star in the backline.

While he did not make a single tackle, Young won more aerial duels than Antonio Valencia and Marcos Rojo combined, and matched the Argentine in making the highest number of interceptions.

His two accurate crosses showed he was able to use his attacking talents going forward, with Valencia managing one.

Young played in the same role after Shaw went off injured against Arsenal, and helped keep a clean sheet against Hull, and is showing the Red Devils that there is no reason to panic for now with their first choice left-back out.
