Win against Derby County shows Leeds United can challenge for Championship playoffs

Leeds United surprised many by defeating Derby County in the Championship on Saturday. Next up is a trip to Ipswich Town.

One swallow does not make the summer, but Leeds United’s victory over Derby County on Saturday does suggest that they can challenge for a top-six finish in the Championship this season.

True, the performance of the Whites at Elland Road was not exactly ‘great’ but it was still better than that of the Rams, which is why one cannot bemoan their win.

On Saturday, the Leeds players showed that they can step up their game, and that under manager Neil Redfearn they will only improve.

It was a complete team performance in which there were a number outstanding players; the football Leeds player was decent as well.

Heading into the match, Leeds were largely the underdogs despite the assured presence of over 25,000 fans at Elland Road.

Derby had registered some important wins in recent weeks and were - and still are - the Championship leaders.

Winning against Derby is no mean feat, but on Saturday the Leeds players showed that they do have the ability to get the better of the very best of the Championship.

What the Whites now need is to build on this win and continue to work on the areas they are not comfortable.

Next up for Leeds is a trip to Ipswich Town on Saturday. It will not be easy against the Tractor Boys, but they will certainly have the confidence and self-conviction to pick up a win at Portman Road.
