Chelsea midfielder Nemanja Matic says the Blues cannot allow a repeat of the performance against Sunderland when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the London derby at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues head into the match after dominating a 0-0 draw against the Black Cats and Matic simply says the side have to improve on their goalless tally when they take on Spurs this Wednesday.
“It was difficult for us to find a space there. We didn’t find the space, but in the next game (against Spurs) this cannot happen – we have to score,” said Matic.
“Of course now every team is going to defend like that and we know that, but we are ready for it, we will just have find a space to score.”
Tottenham will have to produce a very different performance to the one they showed against Everton because Chelsea have players who can punish the space Spurs leave more effectively.
It’s not in Tottenham’s game to put ten men behind the ball and defend deep for 90 minutes as their performance away at Arsenal earlier on this season showed.
However, they may have to defend hard at times because Matic’s comments suggest there is a very gritty and steely determination within the Chelsea squad to make sure they don’t drop points for two games in a row.
They still have a lead at the top of the Premier League and despite the fact they’ll be missing Diego Costa, Matic’s comments also suggest he’s got full belief and confidence in the back up options ready to step in and lead the Chelsea front line.
His message to Tottenham is clear; we will score. The message going back the other way has to be one of complete and utter defiance if Tottenham are to take anything back to North London.
