Robin van Persie’s spectacular header for Holland is among the three best goals of 2014.
Manchester United striker Robin van Persie has been made it on the shortlist of three players for the prestigious FIFA Puskas award.
The trophy is given to the best goal of 2014 nominated by fellow professional footballers and is to be awarded at the upcoming Ballon d’Or gala.
After a relatively disappointing season with United last term, the former Arsenal man regained his confidence after spending some time with boss Louis van Gaal while recovering from an injury.
The Dutch went in to the tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign but were handed a difficult group containing reigning champions Spain, South American outfit Chile and Australia.
After falling a goal behind in their opening match against Spain and struggling, a sumptuous equaliser from the United striker sent fans around the world into a frenzy such was its brilliance.
A long ball from United's summer signing Danny Blind was met with a diving header from van Persie which looped over the despairing Iker Casillas – a goal which prompted a stunning 5-1 comeback victory.
While van Persie’s exquisite finish was not quite van Basten-esque, it instantly became famous in Holland as fans around the country started to meme the action and post photos on social media websites.
Given its popularity, it would take a brave man to bet against van Persie from claiming the award though fellow finalists James Rodriguez and Stephanie Roche will hope that isn't the case.
