Sam Allardyce's bids to add another physical midfielder to his West Ham squad have seen him linked with Besiktas star Atiba Hutchinson, but the strongest link so far has surrounding Sampdoria maestro Pedro Obiang.
The Spaniard, 22, has been labeled as the next Yaya Toure, and West Ham had a bid rejected for this services in the summer having impressed in Serie A.
Recent speculation has suggested that West Ham will look to make another bid for him in the January transfer window, and Sampdoria could be tempted into a sale.
With his former club Atletico Madrid also monitoring Obiang's displays, there is no shortage of interest in his services - and Sampdoria legend Sergio Volpi isn't surprised.
The former midfielder spent six years with Sampdoria, making almost 200 league appearances for the club and becoming a firm fans favourite in the process - and in an interview in Italy, he was full of praise for Obiang, suggesting that he is the perfect modern midfielder thanks to his box-to-box abilities.
"He arrived at Sampdoria when I was already gone, but I have seen him live," said Volpi. "He has impressive physical strength, any top team would be fortunate to have him."
"He never stops, fights and contests for the ball, and then also goes to attack. He is the modern midfielder," he added.
Volpi's comments are high praise indeed for Obiang, and West Ham fans should be encouraged by the comments of adoration pouring in for the midfielder, who could end up wearing the Claret and Blue of the Hammers in January.
